A CELEBRATION FOR THE UN INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE OLDER PERSON 1999

The successful ageing of our population is one of the triumphs of civilization at the end of the second millenium. Creativity in later life has been notable among composers: examples include Schutz (Passions), Bach (B Minor Mass), Bruckner (8th and 9th symphonies), Verdi (Requiem, Otello, Falstaff) Wagner (Parsifal), Shostakovich (15th symphony and 15th string quartet), Stravinsky (Rake's Progress, Agon) and Lutoslawski (3rd and 4th symphonies).

As part of the celebration of the UN International Year of the Older Person 1999, AGE-RELATED HEALTH CARE highlighted performances of music composed in later life, in collaboration with RTE and with the co-operation of the Arts Council. Activities included:

  • A programme insert for RTE concert programmes which featured Late Life Creativity music
  • The Arts Council invited all bodies supported by it to use similar inserts
  • Specially compiled disc of Late Life Creativity music commissioned, and presented to delegates at the British Geriatrics Society Conference in Cork in April 1999
  • Special broadcasts of dedicated to Late Life Creativity music in September/October 1999 on Lyric FM, Ireland's National Classical Music Station
  • A web-page covering the composers from these broadcasts
  • A series of reproductions celebrating Late Life Creativity in painting in the Age-Related Health Care Unit
